Mark certificate

Most mailbox providers that support BIMI expect a mark certificate: a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) based on a registered trademark, or a Common Mark Certificate (CMC) based on documented prior logo use.

DMARC

BIMI requires your domain to enforce DMARC with a policy of p=quarantine or p=reject. A monitoring-only p=none policy is not enough.

  • Publishing a BIMI record does not guarantee any provider will display your logo; each provider applies its own additional checks.

What this tool does and does not do

  • The generated record follows the current BIMI Group documents, but publishing it does not guarantee that Gmail, Yahoo, Apple or any other provider will display your logo.
  • Provider guidance is dated and reviewed against official documentation; always confirm the provider’s current requirements before purchasing a certificate.
  • The optional asset validation checks that your logo and certificate are reachable and structurally sound. It parses certificates but does not verify their trust chain or trademark grant.

  • Changing the target provider only changes the guidance shown — the DNS record syntax is identical for every provider.

What is a BIMI record?

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) is a DNS TXT record that tells supporting mailbox providers where to find your brand logo. When your domain authenticates with DMARC at enforcement, participating inboxes can show that logo next to your messages.

What is the difference between a VMC and a CMC?

A Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) is issued against a registered trademark, while a Common Mark Certificate (CMC) can be issued against documented prior use of a logo. Both are referenced with the a= tag. Which one a provider accepts varies, so check the provider guidance on this page before purchasing.

Do I need DMARC before publishing BIMI?

Yes. Providers that support BIMI require your domain to enforce DMARC with p=quarantine or p=reject. A monitoring-only p=none policy will not activate logo display. Set up DMARC first, then publish your BIMI record.

Will my logo definitely appear in Gmail, Yahoo or Apple Mail?

No. A correct BIMI record makes your logo eligible, but each provider applies its own additional checks, caching and eligibility rules, and none of them guarantee display. Treat BIMI as an opt-in signal, not a switch.

What format must my logo be in?

BIMI logos must be square SVG files in the SVG Tiny Portable/Secure (tiny-ps) profile, hosted over HTTPS. Scripts, event handlers, external references, animations and embedded raster images are not allowed. Use the validation button after generating your record to check your file.

Where do I publish the generated record?

Create a TXT record in your DNS provider at the host name shown by the tool (for example default._bimi.example.com) with the generated value. After DNS propagates, verify the full setup with our BIMI Record Checker.
